In original post on this thread there was mention of Puerto Rico...and how statehood would add to our welfare roles.
-From what I know of puerto Rico, I believe that it is already a drain on our welfare resources, ...but might be LESS so if PR became a state.
-I believe Puerto Ricans are already citizens of teh U.S. and already get Social Security and medicare because they pay payroll taxes, i.e., medicare and SS taxes. So that will nnot be an extra drain.
-However, they do not pay income taxes, yet they do receive U.S. funds for medicaid, welfare programs, etc. That is already a drain on U.S. taxpayers. If however, they elect statehood, then they would have to pay income taxes, thereby contributio to their own welfare programs, and thus actually become LESS of a drain on U.S. taxpayers.
-So in my mind there is no real incentive for Puerto Ricans to vote for statehood. They get almost all the social welfare benefits other Americans do, ...but they don't have to pay income taxes. Talk about win-win.
-In the past the Puerto Ricans have voted against becoming a state, ..mostly for the income tax reasons. Thus some dem leaders of this present movement in congress have offered a plan to have our congress vote to accept then into statehood without the PRs actually haveing to vote for it themselves, ... thus allowing teh dems in congress to avoiding being turned down again.
