Gee, I thought gun control meant being able to hit the target with accuracy.

Actually, I never thought about owning a gun until moving into Georgia. Up north, its not controlled but extremely regulated. I was able to carry my 12-gauge across the NJ border into NY back into NJ since it was the only way to get to the skeet/trap range, but, knew this was not legal even though it was for sport/hobby. Pistol ownership, however, was a major Bozo no-no.

Moving down to Dunwoody in the late 80's, found out that the neighbor'hood was not as safe as we were led to believe. Thus, took police-taught classes and bought a pistol for my wife. Low & behold, we come to find out that pistol shooting is actually another stress-relieving hobby. Every week, we'd go & shoot quite a few rounds at the indoor range. We also found families out shooting. The parents would guide and instruct the kids and the night was actually quite fun for them.

So, as for fascination with guns, its like someone first being introduced to driving. You're being given a very powerful item that you've only seen & heard about but never got to experience first-hand. Once that person is carefully tutored on "how" to use that item, the fascination wears-off and its just another part of everyday life.

The families I know who have introduced guns to the kids have stated the fascination is fairly much gone since there are other items that now occupy their lives. The only family I've seen where guns are a integral part of their daily life (other than law enforcement) is a family who owns a skeet/trap range. The father is a highly ranked sharp-shooter and the son is also highly ranked in his age bracket.

The diffference is how people use these items. Cars have a few more uses than guns but both can still be hobbies. By the same token (and expressed by your paranoia), guns, like cars, are very dangerous. Again, how was someone taught/instructed. Sitting by themselves, nothing happens with a car or gun. As a matter of fact, both items can rust and be ruined with non-usage.
