Subject:   Shad Question?

They were gizzard shad. There are plenty in the lake, and they get that big and bigger, but we have no reliable place to get them. We used to cast net them in Elkahattchie (sp. ?) Creek 20 years ago when the outfall pipe from the Alex City water treatment plant was in the creek. The phosphorus from the plant outfall increased algae in the creek that attracted and concentrated shad. It used to be fairly easy to cast net enough shad for a day's fishing in a couple of hours at most in Elkahattchie. Doug Patterson, long-time guide on the lake, who I fished with some 20 years ago, made it a routine on guide trips to get shad first and then go fish. I did the same thing for years - not guide trips but for fishing with family and friends. The outfall pipe has since been moved to the main lake where the Tallapoosa runs into the big bay south of the 280 bridge. So, getting shad in Elkahattchie is now less reliable. Most folks that use shad in Martin now get them from the Coosa River.

For what it's worth, I wish we had a bait shop on the water at Martin that offered shad, and stayed open from 5 to 5. Getting shad from the Coosa and keeping them alive at one's house is expensive and a lot of work.

Cast net me some of those big boys the next time they run through your green monster light!

Tight Lines!
Wes
