I grew up catching and shooting gar with .22s on MS river oxbows, but after hundreds of fishing trips on Martin I've never seen one. There are probably some in the lake, but I think you'll have a hard time targeting them. If I were going to try I'd go to shallow bays in the creeks, e.g., the upstream side of the Blue Creek bridge.
