Our leaders, in both houses of Congress, at the urging of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, are diligently working on a plan to provide healthcare for the uninsured. CBO estimates, released this week, indicate cost in excess of 1 TRILLION DOLLARS over the next ten years, this to provide insurance for less than 25% of the 50+ million reportedly without coverage. As I read this report aloud, my calculator started rattling around on the desk. I punched in my insurance numbers, using my cost for a BC/BS Family Plan. Let's see, 52 y/o, self employed, head of household, insuring himself, wife, 2 teen boys, $1000 deductible, $3000 annual stop loss limit, $2 mil max benefit, $470/month, $5640 annually, worst case, approx $9000 out of pocket. I punched in the CBO numbers -- ONE TRILLION, divided by 130 million (the estimated 13 million the plan would reach times 10 years) = $7692.37 PER PERSON PER YEAR. My head exploded. They, the very same people that led us to the brink of economic catastrophe, are now planning to spend $30,769.23 per family of 4, to provide the same coverage I buy in the private market for $20,000 LESS per year. Maybe one of the feel gooders that post with great frequency will take the time to help me understand why I should trust any of them, that this is nothing but short sighted Government intervention, an overt attempt to buy 13 million votes. Archie maybe? FEB/Hound? Perhaps some other Prius driver?
