Buteye I think just maybe you get it! Your opinion expressed in the first part of your post almost exactly matches mine but it sure does not align with our current president's nor, in my opinion, many of the other posters on this forum.  The may claim they think the same but in their heart of hearts they, our president and his base have a completely different agenda.  If you do not agree with me then ask a cross section of Trump's ''base'' for an honest assessment.  They will gladly say they want to cut off entry to ALL Mexicans, Muslims, Africans and dark skinned people in general.  A Muslim with a PHD and a Nobel Prize is no more welcome than a rabid rat!

BTW: Some of Hounds statements are fact, some are not...many legal immigrants had neither a sponsor, job or place to live when they arrived.  Of course those were very different times with different needs...in the late 1800s and early 1900s the nation and railroads were expanding west, western lands were opening up to be settled, industry was booming in the growing cities.  Today our workforce is shrinking while job openings often go unfilled, many new job opportunities are opening up without Americans to do the work, Social Security has fewer payers vis a vis payees, etc.  But, banning immigrants is not new...for decades no Chinese were admitted...they came from a sh!thole country!!
