It ought to be a given. YouÕre a teacher, you commit a crime against a child, youÕre convicted, and your pay doesnÕt follow you to jail. Yet, in Washington County, a teacher convicted and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for enticing a child has received $71,000 in pay and benefits from the state of Alabama while she appeals her conviction. ThatÕs wrong. And state Rep. Chad Fincher is trying to change a clause in the teacher tenure law that allows it. Opponents say it is good that the family of the convicted is supported while she is appealing her case, but other employees in other professions arenÕt afforded the same benefit. And neither should those in the education arena. This is taxpayer money, and it should not go to support those convicted of a crime. It ought to go to teachers doing the job, not former teachers sitting behind bars. Fincher is right on this count. And we encourage other lawmakers to join the push and rewrite this portion of the tenure law.
