AU67 asks in above post: "Can you expound a bit more on "the idea of a black man being president?"
-Sure. What I meant is that Obama's election is part of teh traditional American dream. The idea that a poor kid from a log cabin in Kentucky can eventually be President of teh USA. -At one time in teh past, th epresidency belonged to just rich white land owners; then polticians from partrician families; then Jackson hit the scene and it was self-made men; then Kennedy hit the scene and it was Catholics; then Reagan hit the scene and it was divorced men; then Obama hit the scene and it was black men; soon it will be a woman. -All these changes in teh requirements for president reflect changes in the society that elected them. -Sure we can argue about whether these changes were good or bad, but in the end we would agree, I think, that the openess of teh American people reflect continued confidence that the people can look beyound teh physical or social characteristics of the man/woman, and look to their ideals, goals, and capabilites to successfully continue the great experiment that is America. -Sometimes the people get it wrong; I think this is one of those times.
