I don't think I would be willing to become a police officer for any salary.  Not only do you have a bullseye on your back, but everything you do are judged in the media and the court of public opinion.  Your every action will be filmed either by your body cam or by a member of the public with a phone cam.  I can't imagine why anyone would sign up for that.  Most police officers and Sheriffs are good people, but are tarred and feathered with every rogue law enforcement officer.  For the most part, you have to deal with the skum of the earth, but you are not allowed or excused if you become jaded.  Suspects that you risked your life to arrest, are often released from jail to go back out and do the same stuff again. 

I can't blame anyone who wants to retire or quit.  There is an open hit on them.  They have their families to consider.  It used to be a position of respect but no longer.
