If a white Alabamian had said something similar when Congressman Davis ran for Governor, the National Media would have had a field day. It's time for some in this state to get over slavery and move into the future. I'm not saying forget slavery but discontinue using slavery and race as platforms for failure, family problems, politics, etc. This is 2010 and not 1950. Get over it!

Alabama senator says not electing Democrats Ron Sparks and Jim Folsom could send blacks back to the days of Jim Crow

Campaign phone calls recorded by Sen. Hank Sanders charge that, unless Democrats Ron Sparks and Jim Folsom are elected, blacks risk "going back to the cotton fields of Jim Crow days."

The 41-second recording  by Sanders -- a Selma Democrat, one of the most powerful members of the Alabama Senate, and long-time leader of the New South Coalition -- says:

"Hello this is Hank Sanders, Alabama state senator, and I'm still mad as hell. I say hell no! I ain't going back to the cotton fields of Jim Crow days. I'm going forward with Ron Sparks, Jim Folsom and others who will do right by all of us. I hope you are mad as hell and will not go back. You have the power to choose. I will stand until hell freezes over for Ron Sparks for governor and Jim Folsom for lieutenant governor on November the second."

A voice at the end of the call says it was paid for by the New South Coalition.

Philip Bryan, communication director for the Alabama Republican Party, said the call "is race baiting at its worse and insults the intelligence of voters."

In a year when Republicans both nationally and in Alabama appear to have the upper hand as election day draws closer, Democrats in the state are thought to need a strong turnout among black voters if they have any hope of winning the governor's office and retaining the Legislature
