OK, I get your point. I think though you have to recognize that
negotiation and compromise is a sausage making process and that sitting
down and talking is oftentimes the last step, not the first.

But I
think if you realistically look at a budget with a $1.6 trillion
shortfall, you have to admit it is hard to take Dems seriously when they
want credit for cutting a $100 million here and a $100 million there.
That is chump change when you think about what really needs to be cut in
order for us to avoid fiscal disaster like many European countries.

And you also have to acknowledge that until the American people stop punishing politicians for doing the right thing, they are naturally going to be reluctant to do the right thing. We will see what happens when the latest CR expires and the GOP refuses to sign onto another, which is exactly what they should do. They have been trying for several months now to get Dems invested in serious discussions about the deficits with almost no luck and only meaningless spending reductions (at best).

At this point they should not approve another CR. Things are a lot different than in 1995. There was no alternative to the government media back then and there is today and it is more popular that ever. There was no Fox News, Rush Limbaugh was pretty much the only widely listened to conservative talker and frankly most Americans recognize that we are on a suicidal trajectory with government spending and something has to change. I should also point out that despite all the hoopla about the punishment the GOP took after 1995 they only lost 9 seats in the House and maintained control of Congress from another ten years.
