Fishy… your historical perception is accurate.
However, I do not believe I would have functioned well in the military if I thought some man was ogling (attracted to) me. I cannot imagine anything grosser than the sexual behavior of homosexual men. This would be the stain on my appreciation of any man… no matter how well he performed professionally.
This, of course, has much to do with the culture in which I was raised. I cannot bend my mind around men having “physical” love for one another. I do not… would not… ever tell a man… including my father or my brother that I love them. Actually, I don’t. Instead… and appropriately I harbor a deep, abiding respect for them.
As my generation… and the one before me pass on, perhaps the concept of men “lying with each other” will become more accepted. There has surely been (is) a desensitization campaign ongoing. Our children see it regularly on television.
I can see two girls or women walking hand-in-hand… and I think nothing of it (nothing to do with titillation). If I see two men holding hands… my stomach turns. There is a basic psychology to this.
Would be nice if we had a psychologist on this forum (non-Freudian, please).
