“We’re always looking for something to blame for everything that’s wrong in our lives and having a food intolerance is the holy grail. We can say: ‘It isn’t the fact that I lie flat on my back and eat cream cakes all day that made me fat, it’s the grilled aubergines I had for dinner last night. If I hadn’t eaten them I’d be size eight and 6ft 3in.’”
“Gluten, he (Nutritionist Ian Marber) continues, is an easy target “because it’s so prevalent’.”
“…coeliacs make up only one in 100 of the population, while one in five of us is buying gluten-free products. Surveys of US consumers show that, of these, only five per cent are buying to combat coeliac disease, with the vast majority citing their reasons as “digestive health”, “nutritional value” and “to help me lose weight”. People have been eating bread since biblical times without reporting adverse effects.”
“Following a gluten-free diet isn’t actively harmful, he adds. ‘If it makes you happy, do it!’ he laughs. “By buying that expensive stuff, you’ll certainly be making someone else very happy.” [The Telegraph, UK, 07 NOV13]
So… how much do YOU pay for bread and cookies?
