A flock of seventy or eighty of these very large majestic birds were floating on the water in the Coopers Creek area this morning. I watched them through binoculars until they floated to within fifty yards of my lakeshore, close enough to observe them without the need for binoculars. When my wife went outside to get some photographs they all took flight heading east toward the Chuck's Marina area.
I couldn't identify them until they took fight and I saw the color of their flight feathers. Then with the help of a book on North American birds and some internet searching it was easy to positively identify them. Been living here full time for over twenty years and had never seen them before. Sure hope that some of you have seen them, too. Incredible sight.
