There is Gizzard shad in Lake Martin, but most of the shad you see in Martin are threadfin. If you see a shad that is bigger than 6 inches it is a Gizzard. Gizzard shad have a hump in their back and a rounded nose. Threadfin shad are streamlined and have a more pointed nose, with a lateral line high on their side. (this is not a scientific description)
