If you liked "Pillars" you might want to read Edward Rutherford's "Sarum". It is an historical novel in the tradition of Michner which follows the social, political, artistic, commercial etc evolution of the area around Salisbury, England through several area families from prehistoric times to basically the present. It covers the building of Stonehenge, Roman Britain, Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral, the black death and even the Influence of the GI's in WW II. I read it at least 15 or 20 years ago but it was one of the best books I can remember.
