There may be kernals of truth in both descriptions, but how many people are really that easily characterized? Not very many, I don't think. I don't know very many people that are purely liberal or purely conservative.
My feeling is that our country needs both. We need people who want to do things for others out of altruism or worry about the greater good. The thing is, we don't need just those kind of people any more than we need people that are purely conservative. I think we function best when we have a good mix of people. They balance one another. Rather than always trying to prove that one is better than the other, we should be glad for both.
