Let's put Obama aside for a moment.
I think there are a number of indication that the US is in decline. While we are still a militarily powerful nation, our ability to influence other nations is not what it was. Right now, we're mired in two conflicts -- you don't see the rest of the world jumping on our bandwagon.

I started to see it in my little corner of the world in our dealings with other countries in tech transfer policy, particularly as it related controlled items. At one time, what we said, went, internationally. Now other European countries are not as quick to agree that the US is right. They are more likely to look out for their national interest and cut deals with people we don't like (like Iran). At one point, the EU was going to change its export policies to support the release of military technology to China -- we finally prevailed, but we had to give concessions on a few other things. Even those who in other parts of the world who benefit hugely by our foreign policy, have dealt behind our backs for their own benefit.

The rest of the world no longer trusts us economically. We're an unreliable business partner.

I don't like the thought of this anymore than you do. Our parents were of course the Greatest Generation and we were raised to believe in our nations rightness and greatness.

This didn't all start with Obama and I'm not saying he can fix it. I think we've lost our moral compass -- probably somewhere back in the late 60's. We lost our singular belief in who we are as a people.

Just my thought.
