Thomas Jefferson was possessed of a deep understanding of human nature. While he (correctly) expounded on the virtues of government based on Judeo Christian values he also (correctly) established that there would be no US counterpart to the Anglican Church (of England) and that the US could not collect taxes from diverse denominations to pay for the establishment of an official government church. Thomas Jefferson’s setting forth the foundation for the establishment clause of first amendment is curiously independent of his own penchant for hedonism.

At the College of William and Mary, Thomas Jefferson assimilated a true liberal arts education… one steeped in philosophy and history. He became adroit at discussion, debate, and essay. In essence, he evolved to become the epitome of statesmanship. That his philosophy on democratic government and the entrapments set before it, are relevant today, does not surprise me.

We have lost our zeal for freedom and self-reliance. We have lost our understanding that God is watching us. We have forfeited effective debate and argument in favor of incivility. A liberal education today is undoubtedly desensitized to socialistic ideas and feeds off of cynicism and entitlement. The skill for true debate, critical analysis, logic, and reason (deductive as opposed to inductive) is NOT fostered. History and classical philosophy, as subjects of great import, are not promoted.

President John F. Kennedy correctly directed, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” He was restating the personal convictions of our founding fathers as evidenced in their great work: The Constitution of the United States of America.

I am no less human than was Thomas Jefferson. I only wish I were the man.
