I think it is typically American to inflate public figures to the point that they can never meet anyone's expectations. And just as typical to deflate them when they ultimately disappoint.
It is typical of politicans to promise way more than they can possibliy deliver during elections. Obama was not unique in that. He'll be lucky to get a start on one thing during his Presidency. Most of those running for office just do not really understand how difficult it will be to be things done -- and this applies to Repubicans as well as Democrats.
