Our County Supervisor in VA tried to do something about illegal immigration. We had a huge influx of illegals from Latin America. He put in place a policy that would require the police to check the immigration status of anyone that they stopped that they suspected might be an illegal. If they could not produce proof that they were here legally, the police would take them into custody and turn them over to Immigration.

This is what happened. First the Latin population in our county held huge rallies. The Chief of Police publically disagreed with the policy. The county was eventually told by the Immigration officials that they could not handle the number of immigrants being turned over and ultimately released them.

Until the Immigration laws are changed and they have enough officials and courts to effectively prosecute the offenders, I think we're just whistling in the wind.

My sister lived 20 miles from the Mexican border. She experienced first hand the illegal problem. People in Arizona really take the issue seriously.
