I have worked in health care for 30 yrs, and right now work in a small hospital. We routinely treat scores of uninsured people who have no way to afford care, and discharge them with completely inadequate followup so they often return, sicker and more expensive to treat than before. I am also responsible for informing people who have brought their family members into the hospital that there are few community resources, & little funding for them to get the care they may need. It is an incredibly depressing experience to do this over and over every day. The country was built on ideals of compassion as well as independence, and I am all for people relying on the system as little as we possibly can. But when you are broke, unemployed, and have kids or elderly parents to care for.... medical bills either go unpaid or force bankruptcy. We can't seriously expect people to just to go away & not get healthcare when they need it, can we?
30% of every dollar spent on healthcare is consumed by administrative overhead of insurance companies, another 20% is required by hospitals and Doctor's offices to contend with the complex billing procedures of various insurers. There's your savings, that's how to substantially increase the reach of the dollars you spend on health care. Reduce the overhead expenses with a unified system. For now, the bill will limit insurance companies to a 15% administrative charge. That's a good idea.
