I spent a weeks vactation in San Juan last October. At the time there were 'protests' because the Governor had just laid off about 17% of the guvment payroll due to inabillity to pay the bills for the 'state'. I spent one day on a 'tour' with a local guy and we talked politics all day. At that time more than 25% of the island worked for the state, and unemployment was in the high teens within the private sector. NOBODY there, besides politicians, seemed to want statehood. Why would they? They have ALL the benifits but none of the liabillities (taxes). ANY benifit you are getting here, can be transferred there. The local pols see statehood as their salvation. Our national pols want it for the demcratic voting base and a whole slew of new dems in office to help push the messiahs agenda. The mail there is deliverd by the USPS. Federal buildings are some of the nicest on the island. You don't need a passport or even a Visa to go there and if you have a nationwide plan your cell phone won't even roam!!

It is a beautiful island. I loved every minute of my time there. I learned a LOT about the people and the island. It is the only place on earth that I know of that you can go from tropical beach, to desert, to a magnificent rain forest all before lunch.
