"A lot of idling can do it - esp if this is a 20 0r 25 inch shaft and the motor is mounted too low so that water is constantly washing over the bottom/back of the engine cowl. Don't "chop the throttles" at cruise (slow down quickly) and let the water wash back and hit the engine.

There is is not a significant design problem with pencil coils. One breaks now and then. But if you are replacing multiple times, it's the way you are rigged."
