Politics & religion. Used to be moonshiners influenced this through political payoffs but probably not as much anymore. It's more about getting votes now. Some religions are naturally against it because they seem to have forgotten all about the first miracle. (These are the same ones that eat pork and shellfish. Jesus certainly drank wine but would never have touched a ham sandwich :-)
There are 2 nearby towns in NC where one has beer and the other liquor. Obviously a backroom deal
These stories are always entertaining and you just have to go with the flow and stock up!
