I too have waited on line in the Post Office and at the DMV. Like Walmart, I have seen evidence of poor or lack the of management, but that seems to be the case everywhere these days.

I'm really sorry you have never had a good experience with the government. I wish I could take you to DC, and introduce you to most of my past colleagues, and I think you might change your mind. Most of the people I've worked with for the past 15 years were committed and very concerned about the mission. Most of them work a large number of unpaid "overtime". While it is a bit harder to fire government employees (but that has changed significantly in the last few years), it can be done, and I can assure you that I was personally responsible for ending the careers of at least 6 people in the last 2 years I worked. I didn't fire any of them, because there are other ways to force them out, as any professional manager will tell you.


I can't speak for the larger government. I do know that the State Department is notoriously bad for lack of response. My limited experiences with the VA have not been good.

Not trying to change anyone's mind, and I doubt I could. I'm retired now and have stake in your feelings about the govnerment either way.
