In the book "Obama's War", there is a discussion about the fact that the troops on the front lines don't really understand the strategy. You have to remember that young troops want to do what they are trained to do -- fight the bad guys, so I don't think it is unusual that they don't understand the Petraeus strategy. I think it is complex even to seasoned military people, not to mention young troops. They just want to fight and go home.
