Hound, while I agree with your desire to have them set aside politics but realistically it just can't happen.  Everything that is being discussed today is anathema to the far left and Obama/Reid/Pelosi are in the unenviable position of having to really make their base angry.  If you think about GWB's abysmal ratings toward the end of his 2nd term it was partially due to the base abandoning him over the deficits, prescription drug, TARP, etc.  If any President holds onto their base they will maintain at least 30%+ ratings.  When they lose their base it drops below that number, which may be happening to Obama soon as he never had conservatives and has lost independents in massive numbers.

But what we have to recognize is there are very real differences in policy approaches.  The GOP wants to reduce federal spending, hold tax rates steady, etc. and the Dem leadership want the opposite.  Hence the compromise, which is not the best for America but is apparently the best the GOP can get right now.  I tend to think it is better to put this issue to rest in the lame duck session than have the uncertainty of whether rates will go up in 2011 or not.  On the whole, the combination will likely not do much to help the economy but for sure will not be the body blow that the tax increase would have been.

I too have mixed emotions about the extension of unemployment benefits.  I really wish the Dems had agreed to pay for the additional costs with cuts elsewhere but they would not budge because a big core constituency for them is federal, state and local unionized workers.  I do think that unemployment benefits can prolong someone staying unemployed but give the current jobless recovery there are also a lot of people out there that simply can't find meaningful work.  See my post above about the political implications of all this.
