Another way to protect an unoccupied house is to use compressed air to blow the pipes empty. Take a compressor or scuba tank(with a pressure regulator. You don't want to use 3000 psi) A simple adapter can be made from an old hose fitting and attach it to the outside faucet. Opening the valves one at a time will drain the system.
