I lived in New Jersey when I was elected to the school board. I decided to run on the Saturday before the Tuesday election as a write in candidate. I stood at the entrance to the polling place, handed out a flyer, and won. Since I had no agenda that I campaigned on, I was able to vote as a strong supporter of what was best for the students. My only promise was to serve one term.

When my term ended, I went to say goodbye to the Supt. and to wish him well. He made an interesting comment. Of all the board members, I was the only one he could never figure ahead of time if I would or would not support him. I used to meet with students, voted against tenure for some, supported an injunction to force striking teachers back to work, supported the firing of a teacher who was caught with joints in his car, served on the contract renewal committee and suggested a performance bonus where they would receive less in pay but an opportunity to receive more in a bonus. They could not understand that concept of performance bonus.
