From the Arkansas Democrat Gazette

Two local men were injured when the pickup in which they were riding left the road and hit a tree near Cotton Patch on State highway 38 early Monday. Woodruff County deputy Dovey Snyder reported the accident just after midnight Monday. Thurston Poole, 33, of Des Arc, and Billy Ray Wallis. 38, of Little Rock, were returning to Des Arc following a frog-catching trip when Poole's pickup truck lights malfunctioned. The two concluded that the headlight fuse on the older model truck had burned out. A replacement was not available, but Wallis noticed that the .22 caliber bullets from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering column. Upon inserting the bullet the headlights again functioned properly. The two men proceed eastbound toward the White River Bridge. After going approximately 20 miles, and just before crossing the river, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the testicles. The vehicle swerved sharply to the right, left the pavement and struck a tree. Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions as a direct result of the impact but will require extensive surgery to repair the damage to his testicles. Even after repair it is not likely they will ever again operate as intended. Wallis sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released from the Woodruff County Hospital, "Thank the Lord we weren't on the bridge when Thurston shot his balls off or we might be dead." stated Wallis.

"I've been a county trooper for 10 years, but this is a first for me. I can't even believe those two would admit how this happened," said Snyder. Upon being notified of the accident, Lavinia (Poole's wife) asked how many frogs they had caught and whether anyone had thought to get them from the truck.

COMMENT:
Though their actions did not cause Poole and Wallis to exit this life as is normally required by the Darwin Award Official Rules, a special exception has been granted due to the fact that Poole did in fact remove himself from the gene pool.
