I would say go ahead and put them out now.

Also, if you are in to building things and have a couple of acres of woods, I can link you to some plans I found on the web. I built an owl nest box about this time last year, and this year it has a screech owl in it! If I get time I may just post it all on my site. But in the meantime, if you want the plans, I am pretty sure I got it from some university site in North Carolina.
