I attended an awards luncheon today for the use of wood in architecture. The speaker was Chuck Leavell who is a longtime keyboardist for the Rolling Stones, a tree farmer in middle Ga. and an environmental spokesman. He spoke on the need for stewardship in general and stewardship of nature in particular. His jokes included the tale of an old farmer Delmer Johnson who bought the worst parcel of land in the county off the courthouse steps. The land was neglected for decades...eroded, covered in kudzu, overgrown and underbrush infested woods and a farm house on the verge of collapse. He started to work. He miraculousley exterminated the kudzu. he filled the gullies and terraced and tilled the land and planted cotton, peanuts and soybeans. He prunned and thined the woods and cleared the underbrush and soon had deer flocking to the land. He jacked up the house and put in a new foundation and added new rooms and moved his wife in. After working 12 to 16 hours almost every day for more than 2 years the farm was a showplace. One day a preacher stops by and said he had been told to come by and see the Johnson place to be inspired. "Indeed, Brother Johnson, it is amazing what you and the Lord have done with this place" exclaims the preacher.

Farmer Johnson grins a bit, take off his hat and says "Well, I thank ye for the kind words preacher, and I hope it don't offend you too much, but you ought to have seen what a mess this place when the Lord was takin care of all by hisself."
