Personally, I like Vipre Anti-virus. It has a small footprint so it doesn't bog your system down. The company that makes it is Sunbelt Software and they are a leader in identifying viruses and malware. I've heard that the new free version of AVG is quite good too.

Nothing is 100% bullet-proof however. To supplement anti-virus, it is good to be vigilant and aware of unsuspecting ways executables can get served to you, then not be tempted to run them. My PC has been infected a couple of times and I felt like it happened because I let my guard down. It's difficult to say just what a virus does. The worst ones typically like to remain silent while they run a key-logger or file scan and send program. Those are the scary ones.

Cleaning an infected drive can be tricky and it all depends on the virus and how attached it gets to system files. A friend of mine cleans systems as part of his business. The way he does it is to remove the hard drive, mount it as a slave on his computer to scan with several anti-virus programs just hoping to get everything. He says that works 80% of the time, and the other 20% need to be re-installed.

I've also seen web sites marketing anti-virus that are designed in a way to make you think you have a virus, but in fact you don't. They want you to buy their product. That is basically deceptive advertising.

If you still have a problem, I'd be willing to stop by and take a look when I'm at the lake. I'm practically in your neck of the woods. Send me a personal message.

Bruce
