Not sure how many saw or heard about Newt's comments on Meet the dePressed on Sunday about Ryan's budget plan and more importantly the concept of an individual mandate for health care. I will say from the outset that I would never have supported Newt in the primary so you can take my take on this with a grain of salt.

First of all, back in April he was praising Ryan's budget on the talk shows. Now he is terming it "right wing social engineering" and claiming he wants to have a "national conversation" about the issue of health care. Uh Newt, I know you spend most of the day reading your own fawning press releases and promoting your and Callista's latest book but we have been talking non-stop about health care and Medicare non stop since we had Obamacare rammed down our throats. Also, his comment that "we are all responsible for our health care" when asked about the individual mandate makes me shudder. It is obvious he is implying that it is not a violation of the Constitution for the federal government to force someone to buy a product. That is the position of the left and it is wrong. My take on this is he is aiming for some cynical political benefit although for the life of me I cannot figure out what it is. This will not help him get the nomination and frankly makes me wonder what his real motivation is.

Secondly, Romney is in a real box and I don't know how he gets out of it. He has chosen to defend Romneycare despite it being a failure and having any number of resemblances to Obamacare. I understand his dilemma because I can just imagine the Messiah responding in a debate to Romney's criticism of Obamacare, "Well Governor Romney I am confused. You are for Romneycare but against my plan even though they are very similar. I mean, I actually took a lot of the ideas in your plan when we formed ours. I just don't get it." Frankly, either way he is screwed in this election cycle because so much of it revolves around health care and the repeal and replacement of Obamacare with common sense reforms that don't turn over such an important aspect of our lives to the government. I think in this election cycle Mr. Romney is also toast.
