Some comments in no particular order of importance:

First and foremost, I hope the tone of the debates stays like last night. We are in a ABO (Anybody but Obama) election cycle and the last thing we need is for the GOP candidates to spend their time tearing each other down. They spent most of the evening rightly pointing out how Obama is an abject failure and even worse, dangerous for America. I love Pawlenty's term for Obama, a declinist, which is exactly what he is. Although I would go further and point out that it is more than a fatalist acceptance of America's inevitable decline (which I thoroughly disagree with), he is actively pursuing it with his policies. I do expect as the field solidifies with a frontrunner and we get closer to the primaries there will be more pointed differences of opinion but lets hope they keep their eye on the prize.

Michelle Bachman did very well for her first debate. I think she will attract even more haters from the left because they realize she has more gravitas than expected. Watch for the long knives to come out.

Pawlenty also has a great line about Obamneycare and unlike many of the pundits I am glad he didn't overplay it. His point is that if Obamacare is going to be an issue of importance in 2012 then Romney is not the best standard bearer to take on Obama on this issue. Not that he can't pull it off but it would be significantly more challenging for him than any of the others. I think the government media fears Romney and they will be pushing for the others to attack him on his program so he will be weakened for the general election (assuming he is the nominee). If the election revolves around jobs and the economy (which it certainly would if held today) then Romney will be a problem for Obama. But frankly so would the entire rest of the field given the Messiah's incompetence.

Santorum was solid and is a serious candidate. I just don't think he can pull away from the pack. Herman Cain was a disappointment, Gingrich can't be serious about this run although he made a very good point about our need to pick up a lot of seats in the House and Senate to repeal Obamacare. Ron Paul was less nutty than usual and his response to the question about whether Obama has done one thing right on the economy was priceless.

All in all this was a very good debate. I hated the stupid questions (Coke v Pepsi, etc.) but liked the format generally. John King was OK as moderator but the 30 second rule is too short and his little grunts as they were answering questions was a distraction. I also wish there was more on foreign policy but the reality is the voters of NH reflect the main concern of all Americans about the economy and jobs. Having said all that, for a CNN debate it was a pleasant surprise.
