Much as I hate to change the subject I read a fascinating article on China's One Child policy and the demographic disaster it has created for the country. Some highlights:

Because of a cultural preference for boys, China now has 123 boys for every 100 girls. What this means is one fifth of boys will have no hope of marriage unless they leave the country. It also means that reversing the inevitable population decline (demographically you need a birth rate of 2.1 just to stay even) will be impossible.

By 2050 the average age in China will be 45 years old (today it is around 32 years old). One quarter of the population will be over 65 (total of 330 million) and there will only be 2 workers per retiree and scant children to take care of their aging parents. Even if China abandons its One Child Policy I think it will create a tremendous need for euthanasia.

Even when they have relaxed the one child policy because of concerns about the imbalances it has created the results have not been good. Many Chinese have apparently embraced the concept beyond the government mandate and it appears difficult to reverse.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds over the coming decades. I read an article a while ago by a demographer that stated that once a country falls below a birth rate of 1.5 that it is demographically impossible to recover. Of all the developed countries only the U.S. has a birth rate that can sustain its current population into the future. This will not only drive immigration policy as it has already in Europe. It will also drive countries like China in their role in the world community and frankly their need for adventurism in order to support their population.
