Since it is the close of the summer I thought I would remind boat owners to check there transom and floor for wood rot.
The transom and floor should sound solid when tapped with a hammer. The floor may hold up your weight but it might be the foam doing the work. The seats mounted on carpet can make it hard to seal the screw holes resulting in water pennetrating the floor.
On outboards the trim across the top of the transom and the motor well tube holes should be properly sealed. It wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the engine every few years and reseal the above and the engine mounting holes in the transom.
If you leave your boat outside make sure it is covered with a cover that will not leak and is ventilated with an inlet and outlet to create a natural ventilation system. Extra precaution should be taken for boats that have plywood panels and compartments such as Bayliners.
