You know, MM, you may be right, but didn't Bush set the date we would be out of Iraq? I seem to recall that he did, and I thought it was 2012, so in this case, Obama is just moving the date up. For political reason? Maybe. But, according to the polls I've read, the majority of Americans feel it is time to get out of Iraq. So another way to look at it is that he is listening to the American people. The truth is that whether we leave in 2012 or 2011, it won't make a difference.
And yes, we did leave troops everywhere we fought, but you really have to question if that is a good model to follow? It's a different war we fight now, and for different reasons. Should be have left troops in Kuwait after the first Gulf War? The military was upset at that time that we left, feeling that we should have gone into Bagdad at that point and neutalized Saddam at that point.
At this point, I don't really care if Obama made the decision based on politics. I'm just glad it is going to happen. And we both know that the referendum for the next election is not Iraq or Afghanistan. It's going to be jobs.
