I'm not sure what you mean by allowing Michelle Obama to "redefine" First Lady. You recall that Barbara Bush was pretty outspoken and continued to be, even after she left the WH. Nancy Reagan had quite a reputation too. Hilary could be outspoken.

I'm just in favor of letting the First Lady be who she is. If she wants to speak out, then why not? If she is more comfortable in the background, that should be okay too.

I don't think Michelle is a shrew -- just because you don't agree with her, doesn't make her a shrew. Since you have nothing good to say about her husband, I don't think it is surprising that you wouldn't agree with her either.
