Leaving Iraq and Afghanistan does not mean that we are withdrawing our troops from around the world. Did you see the other day that Kharzi spoke in front of some UN group demanding the the US remove it's troops? Those conflicts have run their course. The risk/expense/benefit analysis would likely show that continuing there does not justify the benefit we are getting.

You just aren't getting the point. Our presence in Australia strengthens our ties with Australia, as well as showing China that we are expanding, not reducing our presence in the region. It's subtle. It's not intended to send a major message. If we wanted to send them a major message, we would sell Taiwan some of the most advanced weapons they are always wanting.

This may be the piece of a larger strategy for the region. It's likely not just a random action. Or perhaps the Australians have asked for it. We just can't know without seeing the background. But it has likely been in the works for a long time. These kinds of decisions don't just happen when they are reported in the press.
