I think there is a difference in a "local" and a "long timer". I consider myself to be a "local" because this is my permanent home, has been since 1998. That status does not really get me anything other than some experience: Like I know where to scratch a prop during early spring and late fall, I know how hard it is for local businesses to stick around and I learn to appreciate those that can, I know how far it is to get about anything so I learn to stock up at Sam's. But I still like to get a few things at the corner store so maybe they can stay in business. I've learned who can keep my boat running, fix my well, deliver rip rap, fill up my propane tank, etc. Periodically, I walk out on my deck and marvel at how beautiful this lake is. I do what I can to keep it that way, and do not appreciate those who care less.
Now "long timers' know all that and so much more.
The key is that there are some great locals and some great long timers, and there are some jerks from both groups, just like there are both kind of weekenders (ok there may be some debate there). We all "own" the lake, and nobody owns the lake, but it is one fantastic place for us to enjoy.
