It has nothing do do with where the vehicle is made or the price. Most all motors will do OK, but it takes it's tole over time in older cars. Most cars still on the road (10-15 years old) are built to handle it, so there is little effect other than lower fuel economy (unless they aren't driven on a regular basis). If ethanol sits in any car for more than a month or two, it can cause real problems . My 89 BMW starts acting up almost immediately if I put in ethanol.

Most equipment with small engines have plastic parts such as tubes and primer bulbs that will degrade and crack over a few years of ethanol use. They also tend to sit with fuel in the tank and ethanol starts to degrade very quickly when they do, which can harm the motor. Fuel degradation is a big factor in marine engines because ethanol absorbs water.
