To Paulistas, establishment Republicans are not conservative enough. One may say that they are libertarian and that is true. How Americans define liberal and conservative has greatly changed over the past 60 years. The Republican party was the epitome of libertairanism in 1955. Read George H. Nash's book "The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945". It explains how the GOP lost fiscal conservatism in the 1960s. That is the reason David Nolan formed the Libertarian Party in 1971 and defined how personal and economic freedom relate to neo-liberal and neo-conservative views.

Is Romney more conservative than Obama? To replace the $1.7 Trillion ObamaCare plan with $2 Trillion in additional military expenditures (for the same 10 year period) is not really fiscally conservative. That may mean jobs to some people, but we live in a time when military intervention is causing more problems than it solves. That is one thing Paulistas are outraged about. Regulatory enforcement will be more conservative under Romney. I think the police state will be as large and authoritarian under Romney as Obama but not worse.

Voting for the Libertarian Party candidate is futile. Paul learned that in his 1988 run as the Libertarian Party nominee. The only way we will see conservative change in our lifetime is to influence the Republican Party. Personally, I'd like to see a liberty movement in the Democratic Party too, but that party is not as conducive to smaller government at this point in history.

Military spending drives both parties into fiscally unsound budgets. I'm not going to sit hear and plead that case. But I will recommend reading some books by Stephen Kinser. One that is particularly good is "Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq".

The more I read about U.S. history the more screwed up I realize things are.
