Well WW if your parents were taking the homestead exemption then for the past 10 or 12 years the increase in appraised value has been restricted to 2% per year regardless of the actual value of their house.  If you sell the house the appraisal will immediately go up to the sale price or a professional appraisal (whichever is highest) and the new owners will pay taxes based on the new appraisal.  This system is great for fulltime residents on homestead who stay in their house for many years, but is a disaster for those of us who have 2d homes which can't take the homestead exemption...in the past decade our appraisals were going up 20 to 30% per year to make up for the tax not being paid by the fulltimers.  Lately we have benefitted tax wise because of falling real estate values and the fulltimers are b*thcing and moaning because their appraisals are not falling and now they are in the position of big yearly tax increases.

If you decide to take out a loan on the house you may be shocked at the transaction tax collected (I think it is about 10 times GA's).  I also suggest that you not register a car in Florida...Newcomers are charged a huge fee (I think it might be $600? can't remember for sure) the first time they purchase a tag.  I have no idea about other professions, but architects pay a yearly license fee of several hundred dollars...In GA we pay $90 every 3 years.

Rick Scott wone by about 1% in an offyear election and in recent polls he has run 10 to 20% behind possible Democratic challengers.  He is generally considered to be the least popular governor in the nation and has been as low as 27% approval in polls and is currently in the mid 30's
