It is exactly what he predicted as the main flaw of our form of government is that at some point the people learn they can raid the public treasury with their votes. But as Maggie Thatcher said so well, "the problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money".

Liberals and progressives just don't get that or they subscribe to the Keynsian philosophy of not worrying about what you leave for the future as you will be dead anyway. Conservatives actually seem to care about what they leave future generations.
