I thought about the exposure as well. When we got the water out, there was about half tank left in the boats. If they are sucking the gas out of the filler tube, they prolly can't get more than half out. I am guessing the bilge pump rig possibly used to put the water back in would be very quick (if that is what they did) because most bilge pumps are 500 to 1000 gallons per hour. Thats 15 or so gallons a minute, so you figure if they had a 1000 gph 12 volt pump they spent about 45 seconds (give or take a second or two) of extra exposure. Not very much. Thanks just what I was thinking anyway. What made me think this out like I did was because "my boat quit and I dont have it for the forth and had to take it to the local shop" conversation would not travel very fast. However, "someone stole gas from my boat last night would run through the hood like wild fire". And Kizma, a couple of wakeboard boats can run through a hundred gallons a day easily.
