I went striper fishing on Friday with David Hare of Alex City Guide Service, we had a great time. We trolled north of the railroad trestle with live bait and caught 3 nice stripes, 3 spots, and 1 largemouth bass.  Bar none, the best day I have ever had fishing in my entire life on Lake Martin. All 3 spots were bigger than I have ever caught, as well as the largemouth, plus the only stripes I have caught before that day were tiny. The stripes I landed Friday were 7, 12 and 13 pounds or so. We had another much larger one on but he broke off, and spotted another huge fish toying with one of the baits that was free lining about 35 feet behind the boat. It was like cobia or sailfishing.  It was so big it made me nervous, and by the time I got back there to cast a fly to it, it was gone. I have been on the lake all of my life and I have never had an experience like this. It totally opened my eyes to a new form of fishing. I cast my fly rod frequently during the day, had a few bumps, but no takers. No matter, I was more than content to haul in from the trolling rods.

Incredible time, weather was awesome, and David has all the gear and the know how. I have used fishing guides for trout in the mountains, deep sea fishing in the gulf, tarpon fishing in the Atlantic, and inshore fishing in Louisiana, and he ranks among the best. I certainly have not seen it all, but I have run across some guides that put you on fish but are jerks, others that are super nice but don't seem to have it together. David is a rare combination of a nice guy that is fun to fish with, a patient teacher, who flat out knows exactly where to go and what to do and has quality gear to do it with. Highly recommended.
