back in the good old days:

A few months after the Tories lost the British elections to Labour in 1945 Churchill walked into the men's room in the House of Commons to see Labour leader Clement Atlee standing at one end the old style long trough urinal. The wartime leader went to the far opposite end. Attlee looked over at Sir Winston and asked "Feeling a bit standoffish today Winston?" Churchill replied "No just playing it safe Clement, every time you see something big you try to nationalize it".

Once Senator Herman Talmadge asked a young intern in his office, who had been tasked with sending replies to the incoming mail, whether he was in fact sending a reply to all the correspondence. "Well I am answering all the mail except the stuff from the real nut cases." Talmadge answered "Well son you need to answer the nut cases too. It has been my experience that sometime if you don't get the nut vote you don't get elected."

Bess Truman addressed a women's group in DC during a time Harry was lambasting Congress with tough talk including the claim that they were shoveling a lot of manure. In the Q and A session one prim and proper lady urged the First Lady to try and get the president to stop using such terms as manure. Bess replied "Well I have tried but it's taken me 25 years to get him to actually use the term manure."

LBJ had a habit of sitting up late pondering about policy. Once at 2:30 in the morning he is said to have called his old friend Senator Dick Russell to run a few ideas past him. When Russell answered the phone LBJ said "Dick this is the president, what're you doing?" Russell replied "I was just laying here wide awake hoping you might call Mr. President."
