They don't belong to a union, the New Black Panthers, moveon.org or ACORN so the chance of vote fraud is almost nil.  I can always count on you GF to bring every event back to politics in the U.S.

The Holy Father has been hinting for many years that resignation was always a possibility.  With the 24/7 news cycle, the demands of the pontiff require more than Pope Benedict could put into it.  Remaining the pontiff until death is one of those Catholic traditions with a lower case "t".  Not required but usually followed.

It should be noted that of the electors in the college of Cardinals a great number of them were selected by Pope Benedict and the remainder by John Paul the Great.  Being guided by the Holy Spirit, I am fairly confident in their ability to make a good choice for the Church moving forward.  And I am also confident that the next pontiff will be uniquely suited to lead in this culture of death that seems to have permeated the world in the last century or so.

What will be most interesting to me is whether the next Pope comes from europe or from another continent.  That would be a welcome change in my opinion.  There are some very real possibilities in South America, Africa and Australia.  None from North America that I can tell but who knows?
